Add a Custom Data Type for Dashboards

Custom Data Types can be set to show on the app group dashboards for extra viewing and filtering.

One Example: You have one Utility application, but in the application, you have a field where they select the utility work type they are performing, such as trench, bore, aerial, underground, etc. You can set that custom data type to show on the dashboard, which adds a filter for easier searching.

The reason why it has to be a ‘Custom’ data type, is because most default/generic data types that are set up on the site at inception are used across multiple app types and app groups. Meaning, you could use “Text (multi-line)” on a Utility Permit or a Building Permit, a Moving permit, etc for different fields. If you set the ‘list name’ on that data type, it would show anywhere it was used with the name you gave it. So, you may see “Utility Description of Work” on a Building Permit or Moving Permit dashboard, but the data that shows up in that field/column could be any number of different text fields from the permit applications.

To set up a Custom Data Type, you’ll use the instructions found here: https://rtvision.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/GOV/pages/2692109

THE PIECE THAT MAKES THIS WORK ON DASHBOARDS is the “Lists” step. List Name is the label of how this will show under the ‘optional fields’ on the dashboard, it’s the column header in the table of permit applications, and the filter header in the filters. The List Order is the order it will show on the columns from left to right, 1 being furthest left, 10 being furthest right. CURRENTLY YOU CAN ONLY ADD UP TO 10 CUSTOM FIELDS TO THE DASHBOARD.

After you create your custom data type, you will need to navigate to the App Group/Groups tab and click ‘modify’ next to the app group that data type will be shown in.

Find section 2 “Configuration”. See the “Dashboard Column Configuration” area & follow the instructions below the text box for how to configure your dashboard. Save & Exit.
